The Father of Free Education in Sri Lanka

C. W. W. Kannangara is one of the most respected figures in the history of Sri Lanka. He is widely known as the Father of Free Education because of his great contribution to making education accessible to all children in the country.

Born on October 13, 1884, Kannangara showed great talent in his studies from a young age. He was a brilliant student and later became a teacher. His passion for education helped him understand the importance of giving equal opportunities to every child, regardless of their social or economic background.

Kannangara entered politics and became the Minister of Education. During his time in office, he introduced the Free Education System in 1945. This was a revolutionary step in Sri Lanka’s history. Before this, only wealthy families could afford good education. However, Kannangara believed that education is a basic right, not a privilege.

One of his major contributions was the establishment of Central Colleges (Madhya Maha Vidyalayas) across the country. These schools provided quality education to students in rural areas. Because of his efforts, thousands of students were able to achieve their dreams and improve their lives.

Kannangara’s vision changed the future of Sri Lanka. His policies helped to reduce inequality and create a more educated society. Even today, students benefit from the system he introduced many years ago.

In conclusion, C. W. W. Kannangara was not just a politician, but a true hero who believed in the power of education. His legacy continues to inspire generations, reminding us that education can change lives and build a better nation.
